BioThursday is a multi-disciplinary artist based in London, UK and a recent Fine Art graduate from Goldsmiths University where she had studied and developed their practice throughout the past three years. Since finishing university Thursday has been continuing their practice and participating in group exhibitions as well as co-founding an art collective ‘Thimble Collective’. Statement In my artistic practice, I delve into the intricate and deeply personal intersection of textile sculpture, painting, drawing, and poetry. My work is a fusion of mediums, but at its core, it is an exploration of identity, the multifaceted roles of womanhood, and the profound experience of simply existing as a woman in today's world. One of the most distinctive aspects of my art is the incorporation of my own hair into textile sculptures. Hand-sewing this intimately personal element into my creations serves as a tangible connection to my own being and experiences. The act of weaving strands of my own hair into the fabric is not only a physical process but a symbolic one, symbolising the threads of my own existence interwoven into the narratives I seek to convey. My art is a reflection of a deep-seated belief that our initial reactions to traumatic events can evolve and transform over time. I view art as a powerful medium for navigating these emotional landscapes, offering a means of releasing inner turmoil and capturing the essence of memories and past experiences. The discomfort of revisiting these moments is what fuels my creative process, as if the anxiety and unease of the original experiences themselves give birth to the work.In my practice, painting serves as an 'in-between space' for my sculptures. I create intricate scenes that often feature depictions of myself. These painted moments act as the bridge between the tangible world of the sculptures and the abstract realm of emotion. I use these scenes as a canvas upon which I can explore and experiment, constructing and deconstructing my own image as I seek to represent the complexity of my identity and experiences.Ultimately, my work is an ongoing journey of self-discovery and self-expression. It is a process of excavating the layers of my own existence, exposing the raw emotions, memories, and experiences that define me as a person and as an artist. Through my art, I aim to invite viewers to embark on their own introspective journeys, encouraging them to confront their own uncomfortable moments and emotions, and to find solace and empowerment in the act of creation.
